Big Bad Browns

This week I was in Minneapolis, MN for a work conference.  After doing a little research I found that the trout streams had been closed to fishing since September 30th and the forecast called for temperatures in the mid 30’s. I decided to leave my fly rod at home. However, sometimes things have a funny way of working out. Let’s just say an opportunity presented itself and by late afternoon, I found myself fishing a nearby lake in Wisconsin for cruising browns.  Immediately after arriving it was clear these trout were in spawning mode and congregating along the rocky shorelines and weed beds.  The water was cold and clear but the trout weren’t too spooky. They were selective however, probably because they had other things on their minds.  That didn’t mean a well placed nymph and a little bit of luck wouldn’t produce a grab. I missed a few but landed most. Some smaller Rainbows, but all the browns were big and bad ass.

I fished till dark (which is arriving way too early these days) and was able to finish the day with a nice female.

Who says business trips can’t be fun?

  1. Nice fish! Love fishing for cruising browns in the fall.

    • Thanks Matt. Been meaning to write you lately…just wanted to say that reading your blog posts this summer/fall have really helped me get thru a mostly fish-less couple of months. I’ve just been way to busy with the move and new job. It was nice to live vicariously thru your backpacking trips :) I hope to get out and explore the Cascades and Mt. Hood next year…

  2. So mean looking browns!

  3. Wow, those are monsters.
